PERRY TOWNSHIP -- Trustees approved several purchases in its meeting Monday.
The board of trustees voted unanimously to approve the purchase of 40 feet of 36-inch pipe from Marlboro Supply for $1,526 for storm repairs on Egypt Road, and the purchase of four new tires for the road department's Ford F-550 dump truck from Salem Tire for $1,543.84.
Trustees also voted unanimously to approve the purchase of a Phillips on site automated electronic defibrillator for the fire department at a cost of $1,237.50. Board of Trustees Chair Steve Bailey said that $1,000 of the purchase cost would be paid through a grant the department received from the Salem Elks Club, with the remaining $237.50 to be paid from the fire department's budget.
The trustees also approved the transfer of $50,000 from the township's General Fund to the Police Fund. Bailey said that the transfer had been budgeted in advance but was being made earlier than initially scheduled due to the township not receiving property tax revenue from the county when anticipated.
Other matters approved included approval for Brayden Flory to attend an 80-hour Ohio Fire Safety Inspectors Course at the Wayne County Training Facility at a cost not to exceed $1,500 and to reimburse his mileage expenses, and a motion declaring the property at 1079 Overlook Drive a public nuisance.
During open discussion, Bailey said that the township's community day would be held at the township administration building on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Both the police and fire department will be participating and have their emergency vehicles available for attendees to view.
Trustee Tony Ieropoli reminded residents that the CCH Solid Waste District and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency will be hosting a scrap tire collection day on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Columbiana County Fairgrounds, and that county residents could drop off up to 10 tires per vehicle for recycling.
The trustees also received an update on the township's insurance policy with the Ohio Township Association Risk Management Authority, which will see a 5.7% rate increase when it renews on Sept. 28 due to valuation increases for both the township's real and scheduled property.
During his report, Zoning Inspector Dan Bowers said that so far this month he had issued eight permits and seven violations, and that most of the violations were for work being done without the required permits. Bowers urged any residents or contractors that are unsure of when a zoning permit was necessary to call him before beginning any construction.
The board of trustees will meet next at 4 p.m. on Sept. 28.
