SALEM -- The Salem Athletic Boosters Club will celebrate America's 250th birthday and honor the lives lost in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, during a pre-game ceremony at the Salem High School football game this evening.
Athletic Boosters President Tony Maniscalco said that the club had raised more than $11,000 for a pre-game ceremony at Sebo Stadium this evening. The ceremony will include a 21-gun salute by the Salem AMVETS Post 45 Honor Guard; a memorial wreath ceremony featuring Father Joseph Ruggieri of St. Paul Church and St. Paul Elementary, Police Chief J.T. Panezott, and Fire Chief Scott Mason; and a special flag ceremony which will see a 50- by 100-foot American flag unfurled as the national anthem is played.
Maniscalco said that miniature flags would also be handed out to the first 1,000 attendees, and that the athletic boosters will be paying for the admittance of any veterans with a valid military ID.
Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. and the ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. Any students and families attending the game are asked to wear red, white and blue. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. as the Salem Quakers face the Alliance Aviators.
