Dedication of new Senior Courts to take place at Firestone Park

COLUMBIANA -- The public is invited to the dedication of the newly-constructed Senior Courts at the Harvey S. Firestone Recreational Park on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Senior Courts have been funded by the Bradford and Patricia Tingle Family Foundation under the auspices of the Restoration and Beautification Committee of Columbiana. The Senior Courts are located across from the Spruce Tunnel Pavilion and from the future playground now under construction.
"At the very beginning of the park restoration process, the R and B Committee had a public meeting at the high school inviting the public to come and give ideas on how we should proceed. In greatest attendance were seniors who had the longest knowledge of the park and how it had been developed. They requested that we not forget to provide for senior activities. There had been a history of horseshoes, shuffleboard and archery in the earlier years of the park," Pat Tingle said. "Keeping this in the back of our minds, we now are returning to honor their request by providing shuffleboard, corn hole, and bocce ball. The only one not of early prominence is bocce ball, but it easily can be adapted to senior needs and skills."
The short program will highlight some history and is dedicated to former Park Superintendents and Managers Perry Kaiser, 24 years, and Terry Shaffer, 41 years. The dedication program will include speeches by Shaffer, Tingle, and others with knowledge of Perry Kaiser.
Light refreshments will be served and it is suggested that attendees bring lawn chairs, as there is limited seating at the site.
"It is our hope that the community will turn out to celebrate this newest addition to the restoration of Firestone Park and to honor two of its long-running park superintendents who have shown such devotion and loyalty through their long-running service to the city's beloved park, dedicated to the community so many years ago by native son Harvey Firestone and Idabelle Firestone," Tingle said.
