United Local buildings and grounds supervisor considering retirement

HANOVERTON -- The United Local School District may need to find a replacement for its buildings and grounds supervisor.

Current Supervisor Tom Clemens told the board of education earlier this month that he is considering retirement, according to minutes of the Aug. 7 meeting.

He also said the board should re-evaluate the position and clearly define the responsibilities related to the role, and that the district should consider having a supervisor for the second shift.

Clemens gave the district a few other recommendations during his report to the board, including replacing the current 20-year-old floor scrubbers with automated scrubbers, and an automated mower for the athletic fields, as well as an automated field striping machine.

Board member RuthAnn Rinto thanked Clemens for his dedication to the district and acknowledged the significant amount of additional work he has taken on, the meeting minutes stated.

Also during the Aug. 7 meeting it was noted that third grade enrollment has increased to 60 students and an additional teacher may be needed.

There are currently two third grade teachers. The new position would be offered to union members first.

Elementary School Principal Melissa Cooper said Kindergarten registration will take place Aug. 26 and this year's theme is "Welcome to the Jungle."

Kindergarten enrollment is currently at 61 students, she added.

High School Principal Sarah Hamilton-Phillips told the board she is excited for the new school year and said staff have been preparing for the Open House scheduled for 4-6 p.m. Aug. 28 prior to the Eagles vs. Mineral Ridge Rams event.

The Open House will include food trucks and games and opportunities for students to meet teachers, according to the meeting minutes.
