PERRY TOWNSHIP -- The board of trustees approved repair costs in its meeting Monday.
The trustees unanimously approved the repair of one of the police department's radar systems by PB Electronics for $645. The trustees also approved the purchase of cement cubes for storm drain repairs at a cost of $1,000.
The agenda also initially included the designation of the property at 204 Apple St. as a nuisance property, but the matter was tabled until the board's next meeting. Zoning Inspector Dan Bowers said that the property owner had been deceased for several years, and that he had been unable to confirm the identity of the person who was paying taxes on the property creating uncertainty in how to serve the necessary notice that the property would be declared a nuisance if zoning violations were not addressed.
He said that he had reviewed the portions of the Ohio Revised Code outlining the requirements and contacted the Columbiana County Prosecutor's Office for guidance and that he believes that posting notice on the property's door and the township's website would fulfill the legal requirement.
"As I interpreted it, I make a posting on the website and I make a posting on the door," Bowers said.
Trustee Tony Ieropoli said that in the past there have been similar situations where the homes were involved in a loan through Medicaid, and that the township had been able to serve the required notice to the company which administers the loan. However, Bowers said that when he had contacted that company he was told they "have no record of the property."
The trustees agreed it would be best to post a notice at the property's door and on the township's website and move forward with declaring the property as a public nuisance in their next meeting.
Other matters discussed included potential upgrades to the sign outside the township administration building. Trustee Steve Bailey said he had met with a company to discuss potentially replacing the current sign and had been given renderings for both a traditional and digital sign for the trustees to review and that they could discuss the possibility more in their next meeting.
The board of trustees will meet next at 4 p.m. on Sept. 14.
