GOSHEN TOWNSHIP -- Goshen Townshp trustees approved a new mutual aid contract for the police department in its meeting Tuesday.
The trustees unanimously approved a mutual aid contract between the Goshen Police District and the Perry Township Police Department.
Goshen Police Chief John Calko said the township already has mutual aid contracts with the Salem Police Department and the Columbiana County Sheriff's Office, but one had never been formed with Perry Township.
Calko said that the contract would be "pretty much the same" as its existing mutual aid contracts, and both he and the trustees said they felt a formal mutual aid agreement between the departments should have been completed years ago.
"Previous administrations before [the trustees] and myself and Perry Township's didn't see eye to eye, so we just never had a mutual aid contract. So when [Perry Township Police Chief Richard Kimble] approached me about signing one, I was very pleased with it…Basically, it's just if they need us or we need them, we'll help each other out and we're all covered," Calko said.
The Perry Township trustees also approved the contract between the two departments during its meeting on Monday.
The trustees also unanimously approved the resignation of Sgt. Jacob Rohr, effective Aug. 24. Calko said that Rohr would be accepting a new position with the Conneaut Police Department.
"He's moving up there with his girlfriend. Sgt. Rohr was a great asset to this agency, and he is going to be greatly missed. I wish him all the best on his new adventure," said Calko.
Other police matters included the promotion of part-time officer Raymond Janecko to full-time effective Aug. 23 to fill the full-time vacancy left by Rohr's departure.
The board of trustees will meet next at 6 p.m. on Sept. 8.
