Former Alliance sergeant resigns amid criminal allegations

(WKBN) -- A now-former sergeant with the Alliance Police Department has resigned after being placed on unpaid leave last month amid criminal allegations.

Ethan Griffith, who is from Canfield, tendered his resignation Aug. 10, Chief Akenra X confirmed to WKBN. Griffith's resignation letter does not state a clear reason for his departure, though it follows his placement on leave in late July.

"These last 4 years have been filled with many events and memories I will never forget. It has been nothing short of an honor and an absolute privilege to serve beside some of the most amazing men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing," Griffith's resignation letter stated, in part.

He said he wishes nothing but the best for the department and he handed in the resignation "with a heavy heart."

Ethan Griffith was in Sebring Court in July on charges of child endangering a day after he was sentenced on OVI charges.

He was found guilty in Austintown court of OVI and obstruction. As part of a plea deal, the other charges against him were dropped. The case stemmed from a crash on June 7 that happened in the area of Kirk Road and state Route 46.

The child endangering charge stems from an incident reported at White House Fruit Farm on July 27.

According to a police report, a man said his child was in the care of Griffith and a woman, the child's mother, when the child supposedly was "acting up." The man told police Griffith pulled the child out of the parking lot by his arm and then hit him on the face hard enough to leave bruising, the police report states.

Reports state the child's father claims to have text messages with the child's mother confirming that she saw Griffith hit the child.
