DAHS Class of 1966 celebrates 60th anniversary with donation

LISBON -- Lisbon David Anderson High School and Junior High students will be greeted at the door by a new bench donated by the DAHS Class of 1966 when they return to school on Wednesday.
"I just love it," Class of 1966 member Cheryl Mills said.
The bench was constructed by Matt Baird, with a board sent out for the engraved lettering and the devil head. The lettering says "DAHS Class of 1966."
Mills knows Baird, who also did benches in memory of her brothers, Ronnie and Lloyd, that are sitting on the porch of the Columbiana County Fair office on the county fairgrounds.
"I knew what the benches looked like and I knew they were nice," she said.
The donation by the Class of 1966 is in commemoration of the group's 60th anniversary. A reunion is being planned for September, according to Mills.
During the recent school board meeting, high school principal Keith Edenfield told board members about the bench which will greet students on their first day, with thanks offered for the donation.
"I think we're ready to go," Lisbon Superintendent Joe Siefke said Thursday.
Administrators talked about their preparations to kick off the school year, with Edenfield talking about the Meet The Team event set from 5 to 8 p.m. today at War Memorial Stadium, with the teams' portion of the night beginning at 5 p.m. Families can celebrate the school going back in session with some food and with a school supplies giveaway during the bash.
"That's going to be a nice event," he said.
Siefke reported the administrators and supervisors held a recent meeting which he said was productive and on Monday and Tuesday, teachers will have their in-service days to prepare for school starting. Tuesday will feature a presentation by Andi McNair titled "A Meaningful Mess."
Edenfeld said sixth graders will have orientation at DAHS from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday. He said he plans to knock out all the mandatory requirements for the year, such a suicide prevention assembly and other drills in the first three days, that way the following Monday, the first full week of school, students and teachers will be able to focus on academics. He also announced that the Lisbon Police School Resource Officer plans to present safety training for ebikes and scooters.
McKinley School Principal Dan Kemats said the building is in good shape and ready to go. The kindergarten roundup was held earlier this week, with 42 kindergarteners registered this year. Kindergarten teacher Gwen Weikart advised a grant was received for $750 from the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley to purchase Yoto players, which are audio players similar to a boombox or cassette player. Students can slide in a prerecorded card, which she said is similar to a book on tape. Teachers will be able to record themselves, too, for the students to listen to a message.
"We're excited. We're getting eight of them," Weikart said.
Kemats said the McKinley School open house will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Monday. The first day of school for preschool and kindergarten will be the following Monday.
Maintenance Supervisor Roger Tullis talked briefly about some of the summer projects, including changing out the ceiling tiles and removing a tree from the back of the high school and some smaller projects to get the buildings ready to go.
