COLUMBIANA -- The Columbiana School District is ensuring that school continues as normal for students while various construction projects are under way.
District Superintendent Dr. Don Mook shared with the board during the August regular meeting that safety plans were being put together to keep the construction projects and students apart as work is ongoing.
The district has initiated several improvement projects over the last several months at all three schools buildings and the Ward Athletic Complex.
At Joshua Dixon Elementary the main student restrooms were remodeled and the district is currently in the process of getting new turf for the preschool playground.
Air conditioning and HVAC improvements are also being done at all buildings.
At the high school the district is currently working to have the roof replaced, with sidewalk repairs and a new cafeteria exhaust fan scheduled.
The district is also in the process of a proposal to have the tile replaced in commons, according to Mook's board report.
As for the Ward Athletic Complex, the proposal is in process for softball/baseball fields and cement work for the press box.
Mook also presented the board with figures outlining enrollment numbers at all buildings, with total enrollment for the district at 897 students as of the August board meeting.
The figure is down from 1,043 students in the 2019-20 school year, which was the highest enrollment was for the district between 2012 and now, according to his report.
The district continues to attract more students in than out through open enrollment, with 235 open-enrolled in for this year and 127 out.
The next meeting was set for 6 p.m. Sept. 8.
