Area youth do well at fair’s rabbit and poultry sale

LISBON - Ryder Wilson, 11, Hanoverton, and Rosa Wallace, 14, East Rochester, were both surprised and excited at what their animals brought in at the Jr. Fair Market Poultry and Market Rabbit Sale on Thursday at the Columbiana County Fair.
Ryder's New Zealand fryer rabbit which took grand champion fryer was purchased during the auction by Fairway CMC for $1,100. His market rabbit pen, which contained three rabbits, sold for $600.
Rosa's market poultry pen, which contained three chickens, earned grand champion market pen and was purchased by Case Farms for $1,000.
Ryder said he is happy with what the rabbits sold for, and he did not think it was going to sell for that much. This is his second year participating in the auction.
Ryder, who is already thinking about college so he can become an electrician, said maybe he will use his earnings for college.
Rosa, who has participated in the auction several times, said this is the highest she has had one sell for and the first time having one name a grand champion. She said she was shocked and feels great about the win.
Rosa said she wasn't sure what she would do with her earnings yet, but she would probably be putting it in the bank for now and decide later.
Ryder, who has been active in 4-H for three years, because he wanted to learn more about and be around them more, also works with pigs and ducks in addition to his rabbits.
His interest in pigs comes from his family owning a pig farm in Kensington, and he wanted to do rabbits because they are easy to handle. He currently has 24 rabbits that are his responsibility to care for.
Rosa said she has been showing chickens for probably five years. She opted to go with chickens because she grew up around chickens due to her family living on a chicken farm.
She said she doesn't have any chickens that are specifically hers; she helps her family take care of all the chickens on the farm, and her whole family participates in bringing chickens to the fair.
The auction, which was conducted by Kenny Baer of Kenny Baer Auctiontioneers Realty LLC on Thursday, saw 24 single rabbits or pens of three rabbits sold and 43 single chickens or pens of three chickens sold by youth in local 4-H groups.
Grand Champion winners include Frances Wilson, market pen, rabbit; Ryder Wilson, fryer; Rosa Wallace, market pen, market poultry.
Reserve Champion winners include Robert Allgood, pen and fryer, rabbit; Kaitlyn Kuzemchak, market pen.
Claire Liposky and Kaitlyn Kuzemchak took home Grand Outstanding Project Showman of Showmen awards - Claire for rabbit and Kaitlyn for poultry. Claire was named Columbiana County Rabbit Princess and Kaitlyn was named Columbiana Country Poultry and Waterfowl Princess.
Addison McNicholson was awarded two Reserve Outstanding Project for her fryer rabbits. Kaitlyn Kuzemchak also received two grand outstanding projects, poultry. Zane Liposky was also awarded two reserve outstanding projects, poultry.
