Noted Columbiana resident celebrated for 100th birthday

Vylee Calvert Garstick celebrated her 100th birthday with a surprise open house at the Firestone Community Center in Columbiana. The event was hosted by her three sons and their wives, Jeff (Nancy) Garstick, Larry (Lee) Garstick and Keith (Janice) Garstick. Also assisting were grandchildren Dr. Brett (Emily Patterson) Garstick and Alise (Joe) Vehige.

Mrs. Garstick received well wishes from 100 guests. A special tribute from the Ohio House of Representatives was presented to her by state Rep. Monica Robb-Blasdel. She also received recognition from state Sen. Al Cutrona on behalf of the Ohio Senate.

Vylee is well known for her community volunteering and philanthropy for Columbiana and at The Ohio State University. She was active in establishing the Charter Commission for the City of Columbiana, a founding member of The Columbiana Women's Club, a member of the American Legion Post 290, the Columbiana Area Historical Society and the First United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Garstick was also a bell ringer for the Salvation Army.

Both graduates of OSU, Vylee is the wife of the late Dr. James R. Garstick. Together they managed a successful private optometry practice in their hometown.
