MACEDONIA, Ohio - A local Girl Scout has earned the Gold Award with the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio (GSNEO).
Heather Mohney, East Palestine, East Palestine High School earned the award for her project Shot-Put Renovation.
A Girl Scout for 12 years, Mohney has earned the Girl Scout Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. She is an upcoming sophomore at Youngstown State University, where she studies biology as a member of the Sokolov Honors College and the Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program.
For her Gold Award project, Mohney improved conditions at the East Palestine shot-put area by advocating for proper gravel pathways and constructing a structure that provides seating, storage, and shelter. Her work benefits both current track and field athletes and visiting teams.
Inspired by her experience as a former team member, Mohney identified a need within her community and created a lasting solution.
The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador may earn. The Gold Award project challenges girls to identify an unmet need or core issue in their community, research and investigate it, recruit volunteers, and build a team to create a plan to address the issue or need.
Nationwide, only five percent of eligible Girl Scouts go for the gold. This year, 34 Gold Award Girl Scouts from Northeast Ohio will join the ranks of generations of young women who are recognized for making a difference, both locally and globally.
