EAST PALESTINE -- The village's youth are learning new skills and sharing their knowledge to the older generation.
The Learn to Teach/Teach to Learn students presented village council recently with projects they have completed over the last several months.
The after school program for middle school students has been ongoing for the better part of a year, Village Manager Antonio Diaz-Guy said.
"It is the result of cooperation between school staff, community sponsors, and village council. It is one of the many ways that the village, our schools, and our community are coming together to support students in East Palestine," he said.
The free program takes place monthly and is open to the public, he added.
Each month's activity is sponsored by a local business or organization.
In September and October of last year students learned how to make keychain wristbands and pumpkin bread.
In November, students decorated Christmas bulbs for the village Christmas tree.
In December they decorated Christmas cards that were distributed to residents at the Covington Nursing home, and in January of this year the students learned how to finger knit loop scarves.
In February students learned how to make homemade gnocchi.
Student Everly Crist said the homemade gnocchi was served to the community during a sit-down meal around Valentine's Day that included a salad and breadsticks.
"We served our community and explained to them how to make the gnocchi. The community loved it," she said.
In March students learned how to make goat soap, lip balm and foot scrub.
In June students taught a line dance during the annual Street Fair.
Other ways local youth are getting involved in the community include through the Project EP Class at the high school.
The class is currently collaborating with the village on a new Pocket Park on Market Street.
The preliminary engineering, budgeting, and design for the pocket park are complete and the village is now able to move forward with bid selection and acquiring the necessary permits.
