SALEM — The driver involved in a fatal vehicle/pedestrian crash near the Salem Golf Club on state Route 45 on June 18 has been identified as Gage M. Palmer, 23, Steubenville, according to the recently issued Ohio State Highway Patrol report.

Palmer was northbound on state Route 45 at 6:17 p.m. when his Oldsmobile 88 traveled off of the right side of the roadway, struck the pedestrian, then drove back onto the roadway to the right and struck a culvert. The pedestrian was identified as Amanda Jane Speigle, 35, East Perry Street, Salem, who was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital, Youngstown, by Stat MedEvac and later died from her injuries. Palmer wasn’t injured.

According to the report, alcohol and drugs were suspected, with a breath test given and a urine test, also.

The crash remains under investigation, with no charges filed.
