Salem Walking Tour to highlight abolitionist history, Teach Truth Day of Action

SALEM — On Saturday, community members are invited to explore Salem’s lesser-known history through a guided walking tour highlighting the town’s role in the abolitionist movement. The event will begin at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church on Second Street.

Participants will visit locations where prominent figures such as Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, Parker Pillsbury, and other abolitionists spoke, organized and advanced the cause of ending slavery, including the Mt. Zion AME Zion Church, the Hicksite Quaker meeting house, and Hawley’s Grove. The program will open with a brief presentation providing historical context and an overview of the sites included in the tour. Informational handouts will be available for attendees.

This event is free and open to the public, and will feature members of the Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past, local educators and the Teegarden Historical Society.

The event is part of a national day of action led by the Zinn Education Project (coordinated by Rethinking Schools and Teaching for Change), in partnership with the National Education Association (NEA), the largest labor union in the country and more than 80 cosponsoring organizations.

Starting at $3.75/week.
