East Palestine turning back time for Fourth of July activities
EAST PALESTINE — On July Fourth don’t be alarmed if you see a bevy of beds traveling through Village Park.
For the first time in decades, the decorated bed race is being brought back as part of the Fourth of July festivities.
Teams who register are tasked with decorating their beds and racing them through the park.
Known as one of East Palestine’s wildest traditions, bed races were last held in the village between the 1970s and 1980s.
The bed race was originally started locally in the early 1970s by the late Dick Herriot, according to information provided online by the Hammer N Ink business, which is hosting the online registration.
Registration is $25 per team and the race begins Saturday July 4 at 2 p.m. Registered teams must sign in at 1 p.m.
Now back by popular demand the East Palestine Area Community Together is bringing the tradition back for a new generation to enjoy.
Teams must consist of four pushers and one rider wearing a require helmet.
Safety Rules include beds passing a required safety inspection before racing, a waiver of liability submitted by all participants on race day, and participants under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign.
No electric or gas-powered motors are permitted and the East Palestine Area Community Together reserves the right to disqualify any unsafe bed or team.
Other notable events scheduled in Village Park include the Pet Parade at 10 a.m. and the Bike Parade at noon. Both events are sponsored the East Palestine Park Board.
Food vendors will be open at 1 p.m. and inflatables for children will be located at the tennis and pickle ball courts.
Live musical entertainment includes the EP Oldies Band at 4 p.m. on the Main Stage, with The Figs to follow at 5:30 p.m.
Junkyard will then take the Main Stage at 7 p.m. and will be followed Trainwreck at 8:30 p.m.
The main event, which is the fireworks display, will begin promptly at 10 p.m. that evening under by the East Palestine Firefighters Association.
