Columbiana School District continues upgrades to facilities

COLUMBIANA — Upgrades are ongoing for the Columbiana School District.

In addition to the improvements at the Ward Athletic Complex, the district is also continuing to update heating and air conditioning units and is looking into a roofing project.

District Superintendent Dr. Don Mook briefed the board on the HVAC and roofing projects this month, after first providing a brief update on the athletic improvements.

Mook said the project budget quote for 25-ton modulating air conditioning units at the high school is $691,700 and the estimated start date is Sept. 7.

As for new roofing at the high school, the district received vendor bid packages from Damschroder and TEMA.

Damschroder’s bid was $466,805 and TEMA’s bid was $464,000.

The board of education approved authorizing the superintendent and treasurer to enter into a state term pricing for the repair of the Columbiana High School roof with an approved vendor, with costs not to exceed $490,000.

After the meeting Mook said details of the roof project are still being sorted out that a bid package is yet to be determined.

In other matters, the board approved:

— Several routine financial resolutions.

— Participation in an interagency agreement with the Ohio Department of Education related to direct certification of eligibility for the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program for the 2026-2027 school year.

— Authorizing the Treasurer to enroll in Sheakley UniService Workers’ Compensation Group Rating and Risk Management Program for 2027.

— Daniella Clancy, Middle School Secretary, for the 2026-2027 school year.

— A contract for James Roberts, Director of Building and Grounds, effective Aug. 1, 2026, through July 31, 2029.

— Amanda Dunham as Middle School Resident Substitute for the 2026-2027 school year.

— A service contract with the Columbiana County Educational Service Center for the 2026-2027 school year for student services.

— Compensation rates for substitute employees for the 2026-2027 school year at $110 per day for substitute certified teachers. All substitute classified employees will be paid at the entry rate of their classification.

— A resolution to offer the Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program with available grant funding through the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.

— Several routine personnel matters, including supplemental athletic contracts, summer maintenance help, and volunteers for the new school year.

— A resolution adopting a comprehensive cybersecurity program as required by House Bill 96.

— A Medicaid School Program Service Agreement with Healthcare Processing Consulting, effective July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027.

— A resolution to proceed with the civil bid process, as designed by Strollo Architects, to improve the baseball and softball field at the Ward Athletic Complex.

The next meeting was set for 6 p.m. July 14.
