St. Clair Township trustees fill vacancy in road department

CALCUTTA — Township trustees Monday approved the hire of someone to fill the vacancy left by the retirement of the road department foreman.

Trustees unanimously approved the hiring of Brian Miller to fill the vacancy in the road department created by the retirement of former Road Foreman Scott Barrett and the promotions that followed.

Miller’s employment with the road department as a truck driver/laborer officially began on Monday with a one-year probationary period and an hourly wage of $23.

The trustees also approved new Road Foreman Dave Smith’s requests to get the broom tractor repaired at a cost of $2,698 and the following purchases of 500 tons of ash for winter mix to treat the roads at $21.25 per ton including delivery for a total of $10,624; 1,131 tons of 6M slag for the 2026 chip and seal at $37.26 per ton including delivery for a total of $42,129.75 and 25 tons of HPM (cold patch) for maintenance and patching holes at a cost of $123.75 per ton including deliver for a total of $3,093.75.

Additionally, the trustees approved this year’s salt contract with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) for 600 tons of salt. The price has not yet been set for salt.

A memorandum of understanding between St. Clair Township and the Calcutta Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) for the use of public service radio equipment by the road department was tabled to give Smith the time to get some clarity on the some of the information in the MOU the trustees are looking for, such as what, if any, state fees will be charged and how many radios will the road department receive.

Smith told the trustees that Event Brite estimates being available for street sweeping sometime between April 20-27 and these dates are tentative.

Police Chief Brian McKenzie was present at the meeting but had nothing to report.

There was no one present from the Calcutta Volunteer Fire Department or Glenmoor Volunteer Fire Department.

Trustee Jordan Williams said the Good Friday Fish Fry held by the CVFD to raise funds for the Memorial Weekend events went really well and nearly 990 fish dinners were sold.

Williams said GVFD reported the department had 38 calls during the month of March.

The trustees approved payment of bills totaling $197.072.35.

The St. Clair Township Travel and Tourism Bureau will meet on April 9 at 7 p.m. in the community room.

The township’s spring cleanup day will take place April 25.

The St. Clair Township Board of Trustees meets every other Monday at 4 p.m. at the St. Clair Township Government Building, 15442 Pugh Road, Calcutta. The next regular meeting is scheduled for April 20.
