West Branch board creates new maintenance job

BELOIT — The West Branch school board addressed several personnel issues in its meeting Monday.

The district officially created a new job title Monday, with the board voting unanimously to accept a memorandum of understanding with the West Branch Classified Employees Association creating a classification for maintenance technician. The board also voted unanimously to accept a job description for the position.

The board also voted unanimously to revise High School Industrial Technology Instructor Rodger Sharp’s retirement date to May 29, 2026. The board previously voted unanimously to approve the retirement effective June 1, 2026, in its Feb. 19 meeting.

The board also established two board committees: a policy committee and a communications committee. Board President Debbie Helm and Board President Pro-Tempore Peggy Shaver will serve on the communications committee, and board members Mikki Kanagy and Tonya Dean will serve on the policy committee.

The board also approved several personnel and administrative matters.

Personnel matters approved included: the hire of custodians Chuck Schultheisz, Gerry Brain, and Nicole Jones; the hire of third-grade teacher Andrew McCarty; the hire of student technical worker James Mudger; athletic supplementals for the 2026-2027 school year; and the resignation of Jeff Novak as director of special services effective Aug. 1, 2026.

Administrative matters approved included: adoption of an evaluation form for school psychologists; a memorandum of understanding with the West Branch Education Association to establish a supplemental for the middle school math club; authorization for Neobaseball Ltd to use the junior varsity softball field for the summer of 2026 in coordination with the athletic director; the United Ways Success by Six program for incoming kindergarten students in five units at a cost of $4,500 per unit; a Summer STEAM program at West Branch Middle School the week of Aug. 3; an agreement with Sedgwick for its Workers Compensation and Unemployment Group Rating Program at a cost of $3,115 for the 2027 calendar year; and the continuation of the district’s service agreement with Healthcare Process Consulting (HPS) for the 2026-2027, 2027-2028, and 2028-2029 school years at a cost of $11,000 per year.

The meeting concluded with an executive session to discuss the employment of a public official and to prepare for negotiations or bargaining sessions with public employees concerning their compensation or other terms and conditions of their employment which was followed by no action.

The board of education will meet next at 6 p.m. on April 20.
