High winds cause terror for Sebring family
SEBRING (WKBN)- High winds blew through the valley over the last couple of days, wreaking havoc on their way.
At 5 p.m. Friday, Lindsey Cheney had just gotten home from work.
“I heard a crack and then the ceiling started falling down on us,” said Cheney.
She and her kids were standing in the kitchen when all of a sudden, the walls of their Sebring home came crashing down.
“One child was upstairs in his bedroom. The other two were down here with us. Kennedy fell to the ground. I got hit on the back, on the head, and we just ran as fast as we could,” said Cheney.
The high winds blowing through the area uprooted a large tree from their yard on Vermont Ave., sending it straight through the roof.
“I started screaming, let’s go. We’ve got to get out. We’ve got to get out,” said Cheney.
Cheney and her three children all made it out of the house in a matter of seconds. Her husband, still driving home from work, and the fire department arrived soon after.
“This is probably one of the worst calls I’ve seen with high winds in the six years I’ve been chief. But with the ground being saturated with water and high winds, I mean, it’s kind of a recipe for disaster,” said Sebring Fire Chief Mike Springer.
“I was so anxious, so nervous to just get here. When I saw them, it was I can’t describe feeling just so happy that they are all okay,” said homeowner and husband, Jason Blevins.
Cheney suffered a mild concussion, and her oldest son had some bruised ribs. But other than that, the entire family, including their two dogs, made it out unscathed.
“We’re just happy that we all were okay. It could have been so much worse. I mean, honestly, it could have been disastrous. I mean, this was awful. But the house can be rebuilt,” said Cheney.
A tree trimming service worked late into the night, getting the tree off the roof.
For now, the family is staying with relatives and trying to salvage what they can from the home.
“They got somebody right over to help with the tree. I mean, everybody has just been open arms. The neighbors all came out trying to help, whatever they can do to help,” said Cheney.
