EAST LIVERPOOL — A Reynoldsburg, Ohio woman survived with possible minor injuries when her car plummeted from the Randolph Jennings Bridge early Sunday morning.

Maleya Fultz, 31, fell 200 feet in her car onto River Road.

According to the report provided by East Liverpool Police Department who were on scene with East Liverpool EMS, Fultz was traveling west on state Route 39 when she attempted to negotiate the turn onto the Randolph Jennings Bridge and overcorrected, which caused her to drive onto the right shoulder striking the wall, at which point her vehicle went over the wall and fell off the bridge onto the road below. The vehicle’s rear end made contact with the road followed by the front end. The vehicle then continued forward, coming to a stop on the guardrail on the south side of River Road.

The crash was reported at 2:46 a.m., with officers arriving on scene at 2:47 a.m. The roadway was closed for an hour.

Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be a cause of the crash, but swerving and excessive speed are considered contributing factors. Officers estimate Fultz was traveling at least 70 mph in a 50 mph-zone.

Fultz, who was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash, was transported for possible injuries by East Liverpool EMS to East Liverpool City Hospital.

Police Chief John Lane said Fultz was very lucky to walk away from the vehicle with minor injuries and bruises. If the vehicle had landed several feet away in either direction, the outcome could have been very different, he said, because she would have struck something instead of landing on the road, or she would have landed in the Ohio River, both of which probably would have been fatal.

Charges are pending.
