Driver in critical condition after striking Beaver Local school bus

LISBON — An East Liverpool man remains in critical condition after a crash outside Beaver Local K-12 campus Thursday morning with a district school bus.

According to Lt. Daniel Morrison, commander of the Lisbon Post of the State Highway Patrol, 24-year-old Chase Hartley was southbound on state Route 7.

Around 8:15 a.m., a Beaver Local school bus stopped behind another bus that was picking up students, and Hartley failed to maintain an assured clear distance and struck the school bus in the rear.

No occupants on the school bus were injured, and the students were transported to the nearby school on another school bus.

Hartley had to be extricated from his vehicle with the Jaws of Life, then he was flown by StatMedEvac to Mercy Health St. Elizabeth’s trauma center in downtown Youngstown, where he remains in critical condition.

Morrison said neither alcohol nor drugs is suspected to be a factor in the crash.

Also assisting with mutual aid were the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office, St. Clair Township police and fire departments and EMS from Calcutta, Glenmoor, West Point as well as LifeTeam EMS and Calcutta Towing.

The crash remains under investigation.
