P.E.R.I. meeting

The Public Employee Retirees (P.E.R.I.) of Mahoning County Chapter 18 will meet on April 7, at Avion on the Water Banquet Center, 2177 Western Reserve Road, at noon for a cost of $20. 2026 Spring Garden Workshop

Gardeners of all experience levels are invited to kick off the growing season at the 2026 Spring Garden Workshop, hosted by OSU Extension Mahoning County, on Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The full-day workshop will be held at the Mahoning County Extension Office, 490 S. Broad St., Canfield. Designed to inspire and educate, the workshop features two keynote presentations, a variety of hands-on and informational breakout sessions, door prizes, and opportunities to connect with local gardening experts and Master Gardener Volunteers. Topics range from plant selection and soil health to sustainable landscaping practices and garden art. The morning keynote, “Easy Perennials and Annuals to Add Color to Your Landscape,” will be presented by Pam Bennett, Extension Educator and Master Gardener Volunteer Program Director. The afternoon keynote, “Top Trees and Shrubs for Northeast Ohio,” will be led by Paul Snyder, Operations Manager at Secrest Arboretum, highlighting resilient and regionally adapted woody plants. Attendees will select three breakout sessions from options including growing plants from seed, rain gardens, soil health, succulents, pruning basics, creating wildlife-friendly spaces, and creative garden art projects. A hot lunch, educational handouts, session proceedings, and an optional make-and-take item are included with registration. Registration is $45 per person and includes all sessions and materials. St. Paul ‘Ministry Fair’

St. Paul Parish will hold a “Ministry Fair” after the weekend Masses on May 16-17. This parish event is designed to showcase various ministries, encourage volunteerism (stewardship of time and talent), and express gratitude to current volunteers. The event is open to the public and will be held in the school cafeteria (enter in back of school) at 935 East State St. The event serves as an interactive opportunity to connect all parishioners with service opportunities, fostering community and increasing involvement in church life. It is also a way for any community members interested in the Catholic religion to learn more on how they can grow in faith. St. Paul was established in 1881 and also features a Catholic Elementary School (grades K-8) next to the church building. The pastor, Rev. Joe Ruggieri invites all to mark their calendars and attend this fun, free event for all ages. There will be food and prizes.

Salem Bible Methodist Spring Revival

Salem Bible Methodist Church, 1647 N. Ellsworth Ave., Salem, will host a Spring Revival March 20 through 22. Services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday. Lisbon Alumni HOF induction

The 2026 Lisbon Alumni Hall of Fame Induction Dinner and Ceremony will be held April 18 at the Guilford Lake Event Center. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., dinner starts at 6 p.m. Ceremony to follow. ‘Wildlife in Ice Age Ohio’ event

Cheryl Mattevi, retired geology professor from Kent State University’s Salem campus, and volunteer at the Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center, will present “Wildlife in Ice Age Ohio” March 24 at the Austintown Senior Center, 112 Westchester Drive. The event is open to the public. Social time is 6:30 with the presention at 7 p.m.

Tops 1341

Tops 1341 met at the Glenmoor Presbyterian Church March 10, with Marlene Reynolds, co-facilitator, presiding. Pat Allison and Cindy Hayes were the best losers and Darlene Naukem was runner up. They chose candy and soda as the junk foods next week.

The drawing winners were: 50/50, Becky Andrews; food chart, Patty Gruszecki; weight loss, Cathy Wollam; junk food, Darla Varney; and jackpot, Naukem. Hayes was three times in the best losers book. Dorothy Garn and Chris Plunkett were eight weeks in attendance. Plunkett now holds the travel box.

Plunkett presented a program on the ability and advantages to maintaining a regular routine in daily life. Cheryl Myers will present the program next week.

WLC Club meeting

The WLC Club met March 3 at the Living Well Church with leader Mary Jarvis opening the meeting, with prayer led by Connie Hissam, who then took roll call.

The best loser was Martha Baxter and Barb Tranter wore the officers ribbon.

The challenge will be carried over and the 50/50 was won by Gladys Buzzard. The nonos for the week are ice cream and potato chips.

The contest is going well with each member having to lose half pound and keep a food chart. Next week’s task is to call or text a member for support.

Hissam gave the program titled “Stress Eating.”

Donna Lee gave the treasurer’s report and Brenda Young read the minutes. Both were approved as read.

Barb Try read a funny and then Jarvis closed the meeting wishing all a good week.

Quakertown Super Kids Race

In 2006, Quakertown Super Kids Race began in Salem as part of the Bicentennial. This year the race will be celebrating its 20th year while America is celebrating its 250th birthday.

Registration is now open until April 9. Challenged children, ages 7-18, with a physical or intellectual challenge are welcome to register. The race is free with everything needed, including cars. Sponsors help with expenses. The race will be held June 6 on Broadway Avenue in Salem. Practice Day is May 9.

Spring vendor show planned

A spring vendor show will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. April 25 at the Wellsville Carnegie Library, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Vendors, Chinese Auction and food truck will be on hand. All money raised will benefit future adult and children’s programming at the library. For information, call 330-532-1526.
