Committee receives permission to hang veterans flags in Lisbon
LISBON — A committee of residents, the chamber and veterans groups received permission recently to hang veterans flags throughout Lisbon sometime this year as a way to honor area veterans.
Village resident Cheryl Mills approached village council for permission to use the poles, saying there would be no cost to the village other than the cost of having street department personnel hang the flags once they’re ready.
She said the committee was still in the planning stage and would release more information about the flag program at a later date, explaining the flags will be similar to flags hanging in Alliance, Berlin Center and Sebring which include a photo of the honoree, their name, rank and service.
She said there’s room to hang 85 to 90 flags and they’ve already started a list. They may be able to fit even more if they make the flags two-sided, with a different veteran on each side. Mayor Peter Wilson questioned whether they would be checking to make sure the veterans submitted were honorably discharged. She said there are several veterans on the committee and information submitted will be checked.
During the same meeting, West Washington Street resident Bryan Malone raised an issue with council regarding some noisy neighbors in his area, specifically about them racing their dirt bikes up and down the road and revving the engines all the time. He described the noise as debilitating and questioned why the police can’t do anything per the noise ordinance, with officers saying there’s nothing they can do as long as they’re on their property.
“I’m beyond frustrated and don’t know what to do,” Malone said, even mentioning the idea of moving.
“I don’t want you to sell your house. This is unacceptable,” Mayor Peter Wilson said.
Wilson said he would find out what the situation is and get back to Malone.
In other action, council gave permission to Dana Blackburn for the Columbiana County Head Start program to use the pavilion at Cedar Park for programming from 10 to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning June 8 and ending Aug. 4 and also for the Lisbon Head Start graduation from 10 a.m. to noon on May 22.
Council members agreed to keep the prices for pavilion rentals at $125 at Cedar Park and Willow Grove Park.
In another park-related matter, council gave permission for Lisbon resident Jeff DeCort to reline the pickle ball courts and learned that Ohio Department of Transportation personnel will be visiting Willow Grove Park on April 14 to look at the bridge project.
Wilson updated council on the service day grant of $1,000, saying trees will be planted at the high school for the project.
Council also agreed to a purchase of $1,476 for new hose for the new fire truck, asked Village Solicitor Alec Beech to draft a resolution for the new bidding policy for projects under the Ohio Revised Code spending threshold, approved a resolution establishing an application process for use of village roadways and right of ways, approved second reading on the cemetery price change for burials after 3 p.m. and suggested having the village hall roof inspected to see what’s needed regarding a leak.
The next meeting of village council will be 6:30 p.m. April 14 in council chambers.
