Wind and cold temps add challenge to fighting house fire

EAST LIVERPOOL — There were no injuries to firefighters or residents during a house fire at 512 First Ave. Monday night.

The residence was owner occupied and the residents were able to get out of the house with their dog and call 9-1-1 from a neighbor’s home.

The East Liverpool Fire Department received the call out for the fire at 10:06 p.m., and according to Lt. Alex Estelle, firefighters had the fire under control in less than 30 minutes.

Cold temperatures and strong winds were a challenge for the firefighters.

Mutual aid was requested and provided by the Liverpool Township Volunteer Fire Department. Also on scene were Enbridge Gas, AEP, East Liverpool Water Department, East Liverpool and Liverpool Township police departments and a Columbiana County Sheriff’s deputy who was not requested but stopped.

First Avenue was closed while firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.

The house was declared a total loss.

Residents relocated to a hotel and the American Red Cross was called in to help.

An investigation was conducted and concluded, with the cause undetermined, not suspicious in nature.

Estelle, along with two investigators from the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s office, conducted the investigation.

According to Estelle, it is now the East Liverpool Fire Department’s standard operation to conduct an investigation with every fire they respond to.

“It doesn’t mean there is anything going on; it is just our new standard practice that all fires are investigated in-house by myself or with assistance from the state fire marshal’s office,” Estelle said.
