St. Clair Township trustees approve police levy
ST. CLAIR TOWNSHIP –Police Chief Brian McKenzie’s request to put a police levy on the ballot was approved by the St. Clair Board of Trustees during Monday’s trustees meeting. Â
The levy which will be on the ballot for the May 5 election, if passed will be used for providing and maintaining motor vehicles, communications and other equipment used directly in the operation of the police department, or the payment of salaries for department personnel, including payment of employer’s contribution under R.C. or the payment of costs incurred by the township as a result of contracts made with other political subdivision in order to obtain police protection, according to the adopted resolution. Â
The levy, which is an additional levy, will be a continuing levy at a rate of need exceeding three mills for each $1 of taxable value which amounts to $105 per each $100,000 of the county auditors’ appraised value and will pass/fail by majority vote.Â
A communication from the Columbiana County Auditor’s Office to the St. Clair Board of Trustees notes an estimated property tax revenue of $734,327 from the levy Â
The trustees voted for Liverpool Township Trustee Mike Bahen to serve on the County 9-1-1 Program Review Committee. Â
Bahen was one of four –the trustees had to choose from. The other candidates included Trustee Paul Lease, Butler Township; Trustee Jim May, Wayne Township; and Trustee Matt Johnson, Knox Township. Â
Two contracts, one for power sweeping services for 2026, and one for weed control were approved by the trustees. Â
The power sweeping service contract with Eventbrite is for the provision of an operator and broom type street sweeper with water for dust control and debris containment hopper for cleaning the township streets at $180 per hour with travel one way. This is an increase of $5 an hour from last year’s rates. The township will provide a dump site and source of bulk water. Â
The weed control contract with Grace Services, will cost $3,200, which is an increase of $100 from last year’s rates and will include guardrail weed control along Annesley,Â
Cannon Mill, Bell School, Old Fredericktown, Midland Fredericktown, Grimms Bridge, Irish Ridge roads, McGuffey Drive, MCoy, Westfield and Hill avenues, Ashland Place and Christian Place.Â
Bills totaling $104,029.05 were approved for payment.Â
The American Red Cross sent a notice of a severe blood shortage and will hold a blood drive in the Community Center located at the back of the Township Government Building, 15442 Pugh Road, Calcutta, on Feb. 3 from 11 a.m. -5 p.m. Â
The St. Clair Township Board of Trustees meets every other Monday at 4 p.m., at the Township Government Building. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Feb. 9.Â
