2025 infant death in Salem ruled undetermined

SALEM (WKBN) — The cause of death for an infant in Salem police originally investigated as “suspicious” in January 2025 has been ruled undetermined by medical examiners.

Nearly one year ago, First News reported that Salem Police Department was investigating after an infant was found dead in the 300 block of West Pershing Street in January. At the time, Salem police Chief J.T. Panezott classified the death as suspicious.

After months of medical review, Panezott stated the department received the medical examiner’s report. The result of the autopsy and toxicology report showed the cause of death was undetermined, meaning that they found no trauma or known medical reason for the cause of death, Panezott said.

Panezott said the case will remain open until it is reviewed in full by the prosecutor’s office.
