St. Clair Twp. trustees approve sale of unneeded police guns

ST. CLAIR TOWNSHIP — Per Police Chief Brian McKenzie’s request, the St. Clair Township Board of Trustees Monday adopted two resolutions allowing the St. Clair Police Department to go the state required channels to sell firearms no longer needed or used by the department.

Firearms approved for sale include eight Mossburg 12-gauge shotguns and five Sig Sauer M400 556 rifles individually valued at less than $2,500.

The chief will work with an authorized dealer who is authorized by the state to be able to transfer the firearms from the department.

Fire Chief Dave McCoy, who just returned from a brush fire shortly before the start of the meeting, requested that residents again be aware of the statewide burn ban in effect through the end of November.

McCoy also noted which departments provided mutual aid for the brush fire and explained to the trustees how the need to provide mutual aid between departments through the 9-1-1 dispatch system is determined and that mutual aid is automatic for structure fires.

To date, the Calcutta Volunteer Fire Department has responded to 332 calls.

McCoy also asked the trustees to consider a playground for the township and if they could discuss it between them and look into grants or consider putting a committee together to discuss it.

Road Foreman Scott Barrett said the road department is prepping for winter and working on getting the trucks ready for it.

The trustees approved a resolution allowing AEP to work within a right-of-way, with work to be completed by Dec. 31.

Purchase orders totaling $37,012.52, blanket certificates totaling $7,276.21 and bills totaling $122,344.79 were all approved for payment.

St. Clair Township offices will be closed on Nov. 27 in observance of Thanksgiving.

The St. Clair Township Board of Trustees meets every other Monday at 4 p.m. at the township government building, 15442 Pugh Road, Calcutta. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Dec. 1.
