SALEM — The Salem Community Theatre (SCT) will present the award-winning musical Little Shop of Horrors to its stage this weekend. The production opens on Thursday at 7 p.m. Additional performances run on Friday at 7 p.m., and Saturday at 7 p.m. A Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. will close out the show’s run.
Little Shop of Horrors tells the Faustian tale of Seymour Krelbourn, a meek flower shop assistant working at the run-down Mushnik’s Skid Row Florist. After a mysterious solar eclipse, Seymour acquires a strange, charming plant he names “Audrey II,” in honor of his co-worker and secret crush, Audrey. While the plant initially brings fame and fortune to the struggling shop, Seymour soon discovers its horrifying secret: Audrey II thrives only on fresh human blood. The resulting spiral of moral compromise and rapidly-growing vegetation is pure, darkly comic gold.
The local cast includes:
¯ Nick Dewalt stars as the lovably hapless florist, Seymour Krelbourn.
¯ Emily Huber takes on the role of the sweet and vulnerable Audrey.
¯ Tyler Alexander plays the grumpy shop owner, Mr. Mushnik.
¯ Jacob Capaldi brings the wildly sadistic dentist, Orin Scrivello DDS, to the stage.
¯ The monstrous, singing plant Audrey II is voiced by Lucas Mitchell.
¯ The show is rounded out by the vital “Greek Chorus” of street urchins, played by Holly Hanna, Malina Funes, Emily Glista, Ava Glista, Morgan Boley, and Rain Bradford with ensemble members Diane Capaldi, Jason Capaldi, and Ian McBride.
