YOUNGSTOWN — Summit Academy – Youngstown students and staff surprised the school’s dean of students, Navy Veteran Michael Prendergast of Salem, with a surprise salute for Veterans Day.

Upon Prendergast’s arrival at the school, more than 150 youngsters, teachers and administrators lined the North Schenley Avenue school’s main hallway, waving flags and cheering for the decorated military veteran. Prendergast served as a Mineman Senior Chief E8 for the United States Navy. After 20 years of service and eight deployments, he retired in 2022.

“This meant the world to me. I love all these kids. The staff is like my family. The culture here is amazing,” said Prendergast, after the unexpected reception. “This was one of the nicest things anyone has ever done for me.”

Rebecca Ellis, principal of the K-7 school, said it was an honor for her school community to acknowledge and show appreciation to Prendergast for his service and sacrifices.

“Mr. Prendergast has a tremendous impact on our students through his leadership as dean of students. His experience as a retired Navy veteran shines through in his discipline, integrity and respect, which he models every day,” added Dawn Puryear, the school’s culture coordinator.
