Lisbon Shade Tree Commission makes final call for fall tree requests
LISBON — A limited number of trees are still available for fall planting through the village Shade Tree Commission, Mayor Peter Wilson announced this week.
Wilson said the trees must be planted in curb lawns — the grassy strip between the sidewalk and the street. For residents who live on streets without a curb lawn, trees may be planted near the roadway instead.
“We still have a few trees available for the fall planting being undertaken by the Shade Tree Commission,” Wilson said. “If you have an empty spot in your curb lawn and you would like a tree, contact me at (330) 424-5503 ext. 1852, or (330) 268-1128.”
Lisbon has been recognized as a Tree City USA community for more than 40 years, a designation supported by the ongoing work of the Shade Tree Commission.
In Ohio, Shade Tree Commissions are responsible for planning, planting and caring for trees located on public property, including streets and parks. Their duties range from regulating tree planting and removal to overseeing maintenance, pruning and public safety concerns. Many commissions also develop urban forestry programs, apply for grants and lead public education efforts on the environmental and economic benefits trees provide.
This year, Lisbon residents may choose from three available varieties: Columnar Hornbeam, a medium-sized, straight and narrow species; Columnar Oak; and the Kwanzan cherry, an ornamental tree known for its spring blossoms and slow growth.
Wilson emphasized the value trees bring to neighborhoods.
“Trees offer many advantages. They increase property values, reduce utility bills by breaking winds and providing shade, and cleanse the air of pollutants,” he said.
Residents interested in receiving a tree for their property are encouraged to contact the mayor soon, as the remaining supply is limited.
