Inmate’s death ruled accidental caused by drugs

LISBON — The death of a female inmate found deceased in her cell at the Columbiana County Jail the morning of June 3 has been ruled an accident caused by a lethal combination of drugs, according to the county coroner’s office.

Shannon Marie Herron, 48, Etruria Street, East Liverpool, had been identified as the inmate when the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office investigated the death after receiving a call at 8:24 a.m. that day from the jail administrative assistant regarding a death at the jail.

Detectives were met by a corrections officer and the jail administrative assistant and taken to an office that had pills collected and placed in a lock box. The pills were allegedly discovered in the cell of the deceased inmate, according to a sheriff’s report. The report indicated that Columbiana County Drug Task Force Director Detective Jesse Smith of the sheriff’s office was called to respond to the jail “due to the deceased inmate possibly overdosing.”

An autopsy was reportedly done by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The supplementary medical certification filed by Columbiana County Coroner Dr. George Scott Wilson and signed Sept. 9 said the immediate cause of death was a combined diphenhydramine, fentanyl and methamphetamine intoxication. The approximate interval between onset and death was listed as minutes. The estimated time of death was listed as 4 a.m. June 3.

Herron had been taken into custody on May 30 in Chester, W.Va. and was served with separate indictments for first-degree felony aggravated possession of drugs, and fifth-degree felonies of possession of a fentanyl-related compound and possession of drugs. She was accused of allegedly possessing methamphetamine in an amount equal or greater than 50 times bulk, but less than 100 times bulk, and fentanyl and xylazine, all on June 2, 2023. The case had been pending in county Common Pleas Court at the time of her death.

She had also been scheduled to face a pretrial in county Municipal Court on June 10 for criminal trespass for allegedly entering a home in Wellsville, hiding under the bed and then fleeing the residence on April 9.
