Perry Township’s new salt storage barn is complete

PERRY TOWNSHIP -- The construction of the township's new salt storage barn is complete.

The board of trustees voted unanimously to approve the purchase of the new 32- by 48-foot hoop barn from Elemental Shelter Solution for $50,897.54, and asphalt to pave a platform for the barn to sit on from R&R Paving for $10,380, and the demolition and removal of the wooden roof structure of the old salt sort building by Hippley Excavating for $6,700 for a total cost of $67,977.64 in its June 9 meeting. The new building is expected to hold approximately 500 tons of salt and will replace the prior storage building which trustees have said had significant corrosion to its entryway and wooden structures which trustees found would have cost approximately $10,000 less than the cost of the hoop barn, and that due to the composition of the building the issues were likely to recur.

Tuesday, trustees Tony Ieropoli and Jim Armeni said that with the construction of the structure complete all that remained to be done was for R&R Paving to complete "the final touches" on the paved floor of the hoop barn. Once that is completed and the township's stockpiled salt is moved into the new structure, the wooden elements of the old barn will be demolished while the concrete walls will be retained for storage as well.
