Milliken: Recent financial audit was excellent

LISBON — Columbiana County Auditor Nancy Gause Milliken said the county’s most recent financial audit was excellent, with no findings for recovery and only one notation related to how some federal award numbers were reported.

“I think it was a minor infraction,” she said recently.

The state audit released the last week in August covered the time period from Jan. 1, 2024 to Dec. 31, 2024 and also included the Columbiana County Land Reutilization Corp as part of the larger county audit.

“We try to monitor everything very closely to make sure all the departments are doing things within the guidelines that we have. We watch spending very closely and monitor the bills that come through,” Milliken said.

According to the audit, there were some errors pointed out regarding reporting of current period obligations and current period expenditures on the quarterly project and expenditure reports and overreporting expenditures on the schedule of federal expenditures. The funds in question were the coronavirus state and local fiscal recovery funds.

Milliken said it was a minor issue of how the expenses were being reported.

County Commissioner Mike Halleck agreed that the audit is not questioning the validity of the charges, it’s just how the software is reporting the numbers. He also said the federal government and the state audit systems conflict with each other.

“They’re not questioning the expenses or the dollar amounts,” he said.

“I think everybody does an excellent job to keep the county in good fiscal condition,” Milliken said.
