Saturday marked the 53rd National Hunting and Fishing Day, and the 50th anniversary of the Leetonia Sportsman Club’s annual Kid’s Day event which educates kids ages 6-15 about outdoor activities and gives them an opportunity to participate in them. Every year Kid’s Day features several events where kids can complete for trophies including a .22 rifle target shoot, archery, a shotgun turkey shoot, and fishing. In addition to the competitions the event also featured several special activities for the kids including slingshot shooting, canoeing, Olympic air rifle target shooting, nesting box building, and educational displays from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and several local nature education organizations including the Columbiana County Parks District, the Beaver Creek Wildlife Center, the Columbiana Soil & Water District, the Ohio State Trappers Association, and the Tri-state Coon Hunters and Sportsman’s Club from East Liverpool. Organizers said that they were expecting to have between 600 and 1000 people in attendance throughout the day and all participants received lunch and a T-shirt with their registration.
