Volunteers have taken the term “spring cleaning” to a whole new level, explained Deborah Firestone Himes, who serves as the society’s president.
They have reinstalled freshened-up displays through the Log Cabin museum in downtown Columbiana, after installation of new commercial carpet through much of the building.
Thanks to volunteers’ elbow grease and attention, visitors now enjoy the many artifacts amid allergy-free and refreshed eyes.
New exhibits were added, chronicling the histories of Firestone Funland, which is marking its 30th anniversary; the aquacade, which celebrates 90 years with its swimming pool, football stadium and ball fields; Then and Now as the society looks at business like Blue Ribbon Chiropractic, whIch occupies the property that once housed Heck’s Restaurant operations; and Columbiana Pump, which now occupies Columbiana’s first industry, the Strickler Machine Company.

The society also recognized academia’s contribution to Columbiana life, including a look at the one-room schoolhouse of yesterday. As Himes explains, this is her favorite of the new additions and adds, “The Boxwell-Patterson test (was given) at the end of the eighth grade in an one-room schoolhouse to attend any high school in the county, and the board of education would pay the tuition.”
Crews will continue work on the building’s exterior, doing some power washing, painting and sealing after completion.
On the historical society’s upcoming event calendar is a Tea and Polite Society event scheduled at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11 at the First Presbyterian Church with Jessica Trickett, who is the collections manager for the Mahoning County Historical Society, presenting, RSVP are appreciated by calling 330-727-6384 by Friday, Aug. 8.
