4 applicants seek empty BOE seat at Beaver Local

LISBON — A new member is expected to be selected for the open seat on the Beaver Local Board of Education in September.

The board met in special session on Aug. 20 and interviewed each of the four people who met the Aug. 11 application deadline.

The four people to seek the seat recently vacated by longtime member Jerry Barnett are Harry Nolder II, Michael Wood, Louis Volino, and Sam Pruden.

According to their resumes submitted to the district, Nolder, Wood, and Volino have all held leadership positions in their careers.

Pruden has a career in waste management, with a focus on system troubleshooting and safety.

Nolder currently works as a senior medical dosimetrist for Varian Siemens Healthineers located in Palo Alto, Calif., a position he has held since September of last year.

He is also currently working as a PRN medical dosimetrist for Metro Health in Cleveland.

A medical dosimetrist is responsible for the calculation of radiation dosages for cancer patients and those with other serious diseases, as well as oversight of treatment plans.

Nolder is a lifelong East Liverpool resident and Beaver Local graduate.

Prior to his current position, Nolder worked as a medical dosimetrist for University Hospitals in Cleveland and UPMC Shadyside in Pittsburgh.

Other prior jobs include nuclear medicine technologist and radiologic technologist for Aultman Hospital in Canton.

“As a lifelong resident of East Liverpool, a parent of a student in the district, and a professional with flexible work hours and a strong commitment to community service, I believe I can offer a valuable perspective and dedicated service to our schools,” Nolder said in his letter to the district.

“I understand the importance of strong public schools in shaping the future of our children and our community. As a parent, I am personally invested in the success of our district and committed to ensuring that every student has access to a safe, inclusive, and high-quality educational experience,” he said.

Candidate Michael Wood has spent the last 24 years working in information technology and is currently employed as IT Manager for UPMC IT Payer Applications based in Pittsburgh, Pa.

He has held various IT positions within the UPMC company since 2021, according to his resume.

Prior to that he held project manager positions with PNC Inc. and Federated Investors, both of Pittsburgh, and has worked for Siemens Business Services in Mason, Ohio.

He completed a Masters in Business Administration from Franciscan University in Steubenville.

His skills include strategic planning and policy development, financial oversight and budget management, community engagement and advocacy, ethical decision making and conflict resolution, as well as project management and public speaking.

He has more than two decades of experience managing teams, budgets, and strategic initiatives across four organizations, and has spent 18 years as an Assistant Pastor for Christian Life Tabernacle in East Liverpool.

His volunteer service includes serving as Cubmaster for Cub Scout Pack 2043 in East Liverpool.

Wood has children in the district.

“I am inspired by Beaver Local’s recent 4.5-star rating on the Ohio Report Card and its commitment to career-technical education, which aligns with my passion for preparing students for diverse futures. As a resident of the district with school-aged children, I am deeply invested in our community and committed to advocating for policies that enhance academic achievement, improve facilities, and strengthen community partnerships,” Wood said in his letter to the district.

Candidate Louis Volino is board certified through the American Osteopathic Board of Medicine and currently holds several positions, including medical director, associate medical director, attending physician, hospice physician, and physician at facilities in East Liverpool, Hubbard, Boardman, North Lima and Niles.

Prior to that he served as night officer at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital and as hospitalist for Prima Health Care at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital.

He is an East Liverpool High School graduate and holds licensures in both Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Basic Licd Support.

His volunteer service includes serving as River Valley Youth Baseball coach and Beaver Local Youth Basketball coach.

Volino stated on his resume that his objective is to support academics, innovation and safety in the district.

Candidate Sam Pruden currently works as a Gas Tech 2 with Waste Management for New Springfield, Oh, a position he has held since 2017.

He is skilled in system troubleshooting and safety inspection and has achieved improved operational efficiency through preventive maintenance and innovative problem solving, according to his resume.

He said he has proven reliability in managing inventory and collaborating in cross-functional teams, ensuring compliance with safety protocols while maintaining high-quality standards in gas system operations.

Prior to his current position, he served as Operator for Waste Management in New Springfield for 10 years.

His work included operating machinery to ensure efficient production flow and quality standards and demonstrating versatility and adaptability in diverse work environments.

He is a Beaver Local High School graduate.

“As a Beaver Local graduate and having a child in the school district, I believe I can be a valuable addition to the board,” he said.

Pruden also stated in his letter to the board that he has submitted the required paperwork to be on the November election ballot for one of the board positions.

The candidate chosen by the board to replace Barnett will serve the remainder of his term, which ends Dec. 31 of this year.
