SALEM -- City Council President Sara Baronzzi is set to resign her position at the end of the month.
In a letter sent to city administrators and the other members of city council Monday, Baronzzi announced that she will be resigning as council president effective July 31. That means council's meeting July 1 will be her last unless a special council meeting is called before then, since the meeting originally set for today was canceled and council is not set to meet again until Aug. 5. Baronzzi has served as council president since Aug. 23, 2022, when she was appointed to fill the vacancy left when former City Council President Tom Baker resigned from the position.
In her resignation letter, Baronzzi said that her decisions "does not come lightly," attributing it to her family's upcoming relocation out of the city, and the upcoming birth of her new child.
"As we are preparing to welcome a new baby this fall, I recognize that it is time for us to begin an exciting new chapter. While I look forward to what lies ahead, leaving this role and the city I love is truly bittersweet," said Baronzzi.
She said her service on council was an honor and that Salem was a special community, "a place where neighbors look out for one another, where compassion runs deep, and where meaningful change happens when we come together."
"I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished as a council over the last four years, and I have every confidence that Salem's brightest days are still to come," said Baronzzi.
Baronzzi concluded the letter by re-emphasizing her gratitude for the opportunity to serve residents.
"Thank you for entrusting me with the privilege of public service. Salem will always be a special place to me, and I remain profoundly grateful for the friendships, experiences, and personal growth this journey has afforded me," said Baronzzi.
