Salem Historical Society

The July 8 program of the Salem Historical Society & Museum will be presented at the Shaffer Library, 239 S. Lundy Ave. at 7 p.m. Nonmembers of the society are welcome to attend. Following a short business meeting, local historian Eddie Murphy will present the program “Journeying with Harriet Tubman.”

Selfless, Courageous, Committed: Harriet Tubman (1822-1913) is an important figure in African American and the nation’s history. Heralded for escorting many slaves from bondage to freedom, her life had many riveting facets. Murphy brings Harriet Tubman back to life for audiences throughout the country.

Murphy is a native of Wellsville. Ten years ago, she returned to the village after residing in Southern California for nearly four decades. While there, she had successful careers with both Hughes Aircraft Company and UCLA where she was the overseer of retirees for both employers. Currently, she is the president of the Wellsville Community Foundation — endeavoring to make a difference for the community at large. Her research about Harriet Tubman and the development of this portrayal was a gift to her sister Gwen. She considers it a great honor to share Harriet’s life story.

Skin cancer screening clinics

The Columbiana County Health District will offer two additional skin cancer screening clinics.

Both clinics will take place on Wednesdays — July 16 and Aug. 20 — at the Health District office, 7360 state Route 45, Lisbon. Appointments are required; walk-ins will not be accepted. To schedule an appointment for the skin cancer screening clinic, call 330-424-0272 ext. 114.

There will be no charge for residents within the General Health District to receive skin cancer screenings. However, residents from Salem and East Liverpool cities, as well as those from outside Columbiana County, will be charged $5, payable in cash.

Skin cancer remains the most common type of cancer, with one in five Americans developing it in their lifetime. Early detection is key, as most skin cancers can be treated effectively when caught early. We encourage residents to attend if they have suspicious lesions, such as: a sore that does not heal, a mole or wart that has changed, changes in color pigmentation of the skin or any other skin abnormalities.

Starting at $2.99/week.
