Wellsville council places new housing code on first read
WELLSVILLE — Wellsville council members voted during Tuesday’s council meeting to place the new housing code on first reading.
The ordinance calls for the repealing and replacing the Village of Wellsville Building Regulations with the Housing Code.
The ordinance which is expected to go for three readings before passing was placed on first reading with an all in favor vote.
Council members have been considering the new code for some time, researching what surrounding communities have in place for housing codes, rental regulations and building inspections.
A Liquor Control Request for a liquor license applied for by Cole Property Management for Cafe Cole was approved with an all in favor vote.
They also adopted two resolutions — one to exclude the approval of the City of Salem for an alternative method of apportionment of local government money to be distributed in 2026 and the other to approve an alternative method of apportionment. The two resolutions are adopted annually.
Council Member/ Cemetery/Equipment Committee Chair Aaron Smith requested an executive session for personnel reasons. Mayor Bob Boley, Fiscal Officer Hoi Wah and all council members went into executive session and then returned to open meeting with no action taken.
Bills totaling $6,744.81 were approved for payment.
Wah said that she was working on the 2026 tax budget which is a prediction of the 2026 tax revenue versus 2026 expenditures. She hopes to have that ready for council to approve in June.
Boley said that he was upset by the motorcycles or ATVs that tore up the pavement on Main Street during the funeral services for CJ Talbert. He also said he thought that was very disrespectful to the family.
Boley also noted that the village is currently having issues with squatters and that letters to residents about high grass doesn’t seem effective with some residents which means the next step could involve a court appearance for those not mowing their yards.
Smith said the Cemetery Committee met and discussed Richardson Monuments’ Carly Brock’s request to place the footers for the headstones they provide instead of the village. Smith said the committee recommends they leave things the way they are with the village laying the footers.
There will be a Park Board meeting at the lower pavilion at Hammond Park on May 29 at 6 p.m.
