Calcutta Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD)'s Water Rescue Team was called out to Beaver Creek on Friday for a report of a kayak upside down in the water. The kayak was found one-half mile south past the bridge on state Route 170 in Fredericktown. At the time it was unknown if anyone was in the kayak. Crews used a unified command to send search teams to check the creek banks and located the kayak upside down against a tree in the water. Lt. Randy Schneider, CVFD, said. Schneider made his way to the kayak and confirmed there was no one in it and with the help of Glenmoor Volunteer Fire Department recovered the kayak and cleared the scene. The department responded to a similar call last year, where a kayaker flipped his kayak and let it get away from and float downstream. The kayaker waded out of the water, but didn't report losing the kayak. Schneider is seen retrieving the kayak. (Photo courtesy of CVFD)
