Salem Memorial Day Parade
SALEM — The city will hold its annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday.
In keeping with tradition, the city’s Memorial Day activities will begin with a ceremony outside of city hall at the veteran’s memorial at 9.a.m. Memorial and Patriotic Association of Salem President Caryal Emelo said that the ceremony would feature an opening prayer and benediction, a rifle salute by the Salem AMVETS Honor Guard, and a performance of Taps by a bugler from the Salem High School Marching Band.
Following the service the parade will begin outside city hall at 10 a.m. and is set to proceed from North Ellsworth down State Street, and up North Lincoln to Hope Cemetery. The parade will be followed by the traditional wreath laying ceremony at Hope Cemetery to honor those service men and woman who made the ultimate sacrifice for their nation.
“The parade will kick off at 10 a.m. and head down Ellsworth and State, up North Lincoln to the cemetery where we’ll have our annual ceremony,” said Emelo.
Emelo said that this year’s honorary Parade Marshall will be Bill Goodchild, and the speaker of the day will be retired U.S. Army Sgt. First Class Christoper Stone. Emelo said that Stone, a Salem native, enlisted in the Army in February of 2005 and served for 20 years prior to his retirement.
The invocation and benediction will be offered by Chaplain of the Day Scott Davis, while Doug Brannon will serve as president of the day. The Gettysburg Address and “In Flanders Field,” and “The Response to in Flanders Field” will be read by students from the Salem Wesleyan Academy, and the Salem High School band will play the national anthem and two other patriotic selections.
The ceremony will also feature a performance of taps with an echo, a rifle salute from the Salem Honor Guard, and a three-cannon volley.
