Mosquito control
Mahoning County Public Health received 2025 Ohio EPA Mosquito Control Grant Funding for mosquito control measures. One of those measures includes spraying for adult mosquito control. Spraying will help reduce the population of mosquitos and help prevent the spread of mosquito borne diseases such as West Nile Virus. Adult Mosquito Control will occur in the following limited areas within Mahoning County: May 22, June 26 and July 24 at Canfield Fairgrounds, Mill Creek Park Campgrounds, Coy Park and Woodworth Park; May 22 and June 26 at Chaparral Campgrounds. Spraying will be performed between dusk and dawn and if rainy or windy conditions are present, then spraying will be postponed. Those with beehives in these areas, call the Environmental Health Division (330-270-2855) so spraying can be avoided in those locations.
Leetonia valve, hydrant flushing
LEETONIA — The village of Leetonia’s water department will be flushing critical/control valves and hydrants on June 2.
Flushing will begin at the north end of the village then southward over the next month. As department employee Benjamin Wilson explained, the purpose of doing this annually –as mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency –is “to remove mineral buildup on the inside of the main pipes by pulling water in large enough quantities that the flow of water dislodge (it).”
This also is an opportunity for annual inspection to assure the system is adequate for fire protection, he added.
Although the mineral buildup is sanitary, Wilson said that due to possible discoloration resulting in stained laundry, it is important to give residents warning ahead of time. After the flushing is finished, usually running your water for several minutes resolves the discoloration.
