Drumming workshop with Rusted Root’s Donovan will offer alternative therapy

EAST PALESTINE — When the vision of the East Palestine Resiliency Center first began to take shape back in 2023, Dianah Fabry, Director of the East Palestine Resiliency Project, said the idea was to offer alternative therapy. Fabry explained that therapy can come in many different forms and what works for some, might now work for others.

The center has stayed to be true to those words, offering a variety of alternative stress management options from yoga to tai chi to meditation workshops. In May, the center is getting even more creative by partnering with Jim Donovan of Rusted Root to hold a “Rhythm Renew Drumming Workshop, subtitled “Energize Your Mind and Body.”

“Discover the joy of drumming in this hands-on, beginner-friendly workshop,” the center encouraged. “Connect with the rhythms of the world, spark your creativity, and experience the proven benefits of group drumming for your mood, brain, and well-being.”

The workshop will be held May 21 in the media center at East Palestine High School from 7 to 8 p.m.

Donovan is a multi-platinum musician, acclaimed trainer, and Assistant Professor, currently serving as the Director of Music and Wellness at Saint Francis University.

A founder of the band Rusted Root, he co-wrote “Send Me on My Way” featured in several studio movies. The song was also the first music played on Mars when it “woke up NASA’s Mars Rover.”

Donovan has presented over 3,000 music, wellness and team building programs globally. Beyond Rusted Roots and his educational programs, Donovan continues to perform for audiences with his band the Sun King Warriors.

According to the Resiliency Center, participants in Donovan’s workshop will “learn two-handed djembe techniques, perfect for beginners, play engaging rhythms from around the world, unlock creative potential through practical rhythm exercises, strengthen brain with activities that boost focus and memory and feel the stress-relieving, mood-enhancing power of social drumming.”

Drums and percussion are provided, or participants may bring their own to the “100% beginner-friendly workshop.” Participants “can expect a welcoming and supportive group atmosphere and a unique experience.” The idea is for participants to leave “feeling energized, connected, and inspired.”

To register, call the East Palestine Resiliency Center at 330-718-8260 or through the link on the center’s facebook page.

Starting at $2.99/week.
