Salem High School to present ‘Oklahoma’ this weekend

SALEM — Salem High School’s spring musical, “Oklahoma,” under the direction of Attila Samu and assisted by Lorina Moffett, will be presented this weekend.

The show dates are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Salem High School auditorium. Tickets can be purchased by going to https://salemquakers.k12.oh.us/box-office/ or scan a QR Code on any school poster. Tickets may also be purchased at the door. Tickets are $14 for adults and $12 for students and seniors.

The cast consists of 37 high school students, and for many this is their last opportunity to command the SHS stage as they are seniors.

Based on the book, “Green Grow the Lilacs,” by Lynn Riggs in 1931. “Oklahoma,” the Musical, was written by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein, better known as Rogers and Hammerstein. The two were a theatrical writing team writing such memorable productions as, “Carousel,” “South Pacific,” “The King and I,” The Sound of Music,” and “Cinderella,” to name a few.

“Oklahoma” made its Broadway debut in 1943, winning a Pulitzer Prize in 1944. It ran for an unprecedented 2,212 performances.

The film adaptation was made in 1955. It starred a 21-year-old girl, from Smithton, Pennsylvania (about 50 minutes southeast of Pittsburgh), named Shirley Jones, who went on to star as Shirley Partridge from the TV show “The Partridge Family.”
