Columbiana officials get updates on projects
COLUMBIANA — City officials received updates on plenty of 2025 projects during Tuesday’s regular council meeting.
Municipal attorney Mark Hutson and assistant city manager Bryce Miner shared news on the city’s purchase of the car dealership property near Railroad Street. Miner said they hope to have legislation securing the purchase at their next council meeting with Hutson adding they also will be looking on extending the date of closing on the Cochran dealership building as it expires this month.
Hutson also said that he continues to work with developers looking to build on the 7&14 truck stop location, and it appears to be happening quickly. He hopes to have more solid information available soon.
Road closure and banner fee waivers were granted to the Columbiana Project Playground, who will be hosting their family fun night in spring at a nondisclosed date, and the Market on Main group, which will be hosting their artisan market with food trucks on May 17. July 26 and Sept. 20. The Market on Main also was approved for a Downtown Outdoor Refreshment Area.
Organizers selected three non-profits to benefit from market proceeds: American Legion in May, the Columbiana Arts Theater in July and the city parks in September.
Bridget Wolsonovich, director of the Columbiana Area Chamber of Commerce, also requested permission to close the roads for a multiday Music and Chalk on Main event in mid-June, a fall event on Oct. 4 and the Christmas parade Nov. 21. DORAs also were approved for the chalk and fall events.
In other action, council;
— Approved the second reading of any ordinance providing for a contract between the city and Fairfield Township for fire protection.
— Approved first readings of three different salary ordinances governing compensation increases for the mayor, council president, council members and certain appointed officials.
— Took emergency action, requesting that city manager Lance Willard file an Ohio Department of Natural Resources grant application through the Ohio Recreational Trail Program for the Columbiana-Mahoning Trail and accept any money awarded.
— Approved Joyce Allcorn’s request to hold the American Legion Poppy Days outside three local businesses on Friday, May 23 and Saturday, May 24.
