Wellsville man indicted for attempted murder
LISBON — A Wellsville man accused of severely beating a woman with a blunt object in Wellsville and then taking action that could have caused a fire is facing multiple felony counts, including attempted murder.
Michael Stacy, 34, 19th Street, was openly indicted by the Columbiana County Grand Jury this week for the charges related to the Oct. 17 attack.
Besides the first-degree felony attempted murder, the charges against him include felonious assault, a second-degree felony, two counts of attempted aggravated arson, one a second-degree felony and one a third-degree felony, third-degree felony abduction and fourth-degree felony trespass in a habitation when a person is present or likely to be present.
Columbiana County Prosecutor Vito Abruzzino said that the defendant hit the woman “severely enough that we believe he was going to kill her.”
He trespassed on the property and used a wooden object to hit the woman over the head, he explained.
When police arrived at the property, officers found all the burners on the stove on, wide open, he said, leading to the attempted arson charges. The second-degree felony count involved the risk of harm to the woman and the third-degree felony count involved the possible risk to the home.
Stacy remains jailed under a $100,000 cash or surety bond, with arraignment set in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court on Dec. 12.
The grand jury, which met for two days and examined 44 cases, issued six open indictments and 38 secret indictments. The secret indictments will not become public until the defendants are served with the paperwork.
Other open indictments issued included:
— Robert Kastanek, 40, North Madison Avenue, Salem, two counts of felonious assault, a second-degree felony, for allegedly punching a woman in the face multiple times, using brass knuckles while punching her in the face and stomping on her ribs while she was on the ground on Sept. 18 in Salem.

During a traffic stop on Aug. 5 in Lisbon, Ward allegedly attempted to carry a small silver box out of her vehicle after being told to leave all items in the vehicle, she then re-entered the vehicle before exiting the vehicle again. While Lisbon police attempted to handcuff her, she threw the box into a grassy area and police found it contained suspected narcotics. She continued trying to enter the vehicle and resisted.
