SALEM — The demolition of a partially collapsed building on State Street was completed Tuesday evening.
The roof of the building located between BB Rooners and Heggy’s Confectionary at 288 E. State St., which formerly housed Kitchen Klassics and the law office of Earl Schory II, caved in at roughly 1:45 p.m. Sunday afternoon, prompting a section of State Street to be shut down with detours posted from South Lincoln to Ellsworth Avenue until the demolition could be completed. That demolition was completed, and following cleanup State Street was officially re-opened Tuesday evening at around 6:30 p.m.
The demolition was initially expected to be completed Monday, but was extended into Tuesday amid concerns that the demolition could negatively impact the structural integrity of Heggy’s, with the decision ultimately being made to leave the adjoining wall with Heggy’s standing to reinforce the building.
Fire Chief Scott Mason has said that nobody was injured; however, debris from the initial collapse tore a canopy in the rear of BB Rooners and debris from the initial demolition process Sunday hit Heggy’s, damaging their cooling system and roof which required utilities to the building to be shut off as a precaution and will require repairs before the business can re-open.
The cost to demolish the property, which Mason has said was already scheduled for demolition next week and had begun pre-demolition, will be applied to the owner’s property taxes.
