Columbiana BOE approves personnel appointments

COLUMBIANA — Summer time always means a lot of housekeeping issues, especially in regards to personnel, and Columbiana school was no different.

School board members approved the following personnel appointments:

— Erin Heasley, athletic director, Aug. 1, 2024, through July 31, 2027.

— James Roberts, director of building and grounds, Aug. 1, 2024 through July 31, 2027.

— Marci Freedy, coordinator of special education and assistant principal, effective Aug. 1, 2024, through July 31, 2027.

— Kristy Cyrus, accounts payable administrative assistant, July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2027.

— Christine Freeland, payroll administrative assistant, July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2027.

— Nancy Tirpak, EMIS coordinator and administrative assistant, Aug. 1, 2024, through July 31, 2027.

— Chris Earl, technology director, effective June 1, 2024, through June 30, 2027.

Continuing contracts were issued to classified employees Autumn Howell and Danielle Schmidt, effective July 1.

Kim Sharshan, elementary principal and assistant superintendent, also was approved for an undisclosed contract addendum.

Debra Ulam was employed to oversee the high school Academic Challenge team, Tirpak to shared contracts for the freshman class adviser, student government adviser and OSHA compliance. Several pages of supplemental contracts were assigned for classes, clubs, prom, student government, and other extracurricular activities during Tuesday night’s meeting.

The following employees also were approved for Heartland Christian School through the district’s auxiliary services program for a set number of hours per week: Diann Barton as clerk; Amanda Ellis, Charity Kibbe and Caitlin Sinn as nurses; Julie Kimpel as speech therapist; and MaryAnn Esenwein, Kathy Jones, Elizabeth LaRiccia, Tamra McCoy, Ashley Vogel and James LaRiccia as intervention specialists.

Board president Angie Jeffries abstained for the amendment to the district’s College Credit Plus Memorandum of Understanding with Youngstown State University for Fall 2024 through Spring 2025. The vote ultimately passed with support from Scott Caron, Michael Clark and Anthony Roncone as board member Kelly Williamson hadn’t re-entered the meeting after the board had exited to go into executive session for personnel shortly after 7 p.m.

Thus, Williamson was just present for the initial roll call, adoption of the agenda, the superintendent’s report and the public input section of the meeting discussing Title I and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act funds, which drew no public input.

Board members also approved the June 2024 financial reports, minutes for May 14 and June 11 board meetings, transfers totaling $31,000 from the General Fund into the Athletic ($25,000) and Cafeteria ($6,000) funds as well as a renewal of a contract with Nutrition Inc. for operation and management of the cafeteria.

A 60-month lease for district copier services with Ricoh USA and a contract with Mahoning Valley Community School, which will provide certain services to special needs students between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025.

Members also authorized changes to bus routes for the upcoming school year as well as contracting with Holloway insurance for property, fleet and liability insurance for the district/

The district also passed a resolution agreeing to pay the parent or guardians for Andrew and Sophia Klindworth as well as Martin Eusanio for transport to Holy Family as doing it themselves would be impractical due to the distance. Holy Family School is located in Poland, Ohio.

Board members also adopted the Success and Wellness Plan as submitted by Superintendent Don Mook as well as the 2024-25 Joshua Dixon Preschool Handbook with revisions.

The Columbiana school board next will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13 in the high school media center.
