Calcutta Lions Club
The Calcutta Lions Club met for its regular meeting Tuesday at the Peter Metrovich Community Center with 13 in attendance. King Lion Rich Titus called the meeting to order at 6:33 p.m. Lion Marianne Wolf led the invocation. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all. Dinner was provided by Lions Carol Anderson and Janet Christen.
Lion Gary Freeh began the tail twisting with a funny story.
Lion Sharon Hall handed out minutes to the previous meeting. Lion Kathy Barker made a motion to accept, seconded by Lion Ruby Heldman. Motion carried.
Wolf gave a treasurer's report. Lion Rosemary Bruehler made a motion to accept, seconded by Lion Joe Hall. Motion carried.
Freeh stated the next blood drive is May 28. Those interested in donating may make an appointment with Red Cross online.
Titus informed everyone that the pasta dinner fundraiser has been put on hold until the fall.
Titus mentioned that the hot dog sales have been set for June 1 and 8 at Busy Beaver.
Hall asked for volunteers for the highway clean up this Saturday at 10 a.m. at the 7 & 11 park-n-ride. He also reminded all that the first park clean-up of this year will be Saturday, May 4 at Beaver Creek at 9 a.m. He stated that the Tourism Bureau is looking for help with the hoagie sale at Giant Eagle on May 3 and 4.
The club will be participating in the Memorial Day Festivities in Calcutta and raffling off a Trex bench with supplies. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20.
Wolf, Titus and Bruehler will head up choosing the scholarship winners from Beaver Local this year.
Hall made a motion to adjourn at 7:34 p.m.
Winona Ruritan Club
WINONA - The Winona Ruritan Club held its annual Father, Daughter, Granddaughter, Great-Granddaughter dinner meeting Tuesday, April 23, at the Winona Friends Church. President Rob Doyle Jr. called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. and welcomed everyone, members and guests to the annual event and thanked all for attending. He then asked everyone
to rise and led in the singing of "America." Member Homer Althouse gave the Invocation. The caterer served another meal of tossed vegetable salad with choice of dressings, three cheese lasagna, green beans, dinner rolls and butter, choice of cake flavors for dessert and water, iced tea and coffee.
Secretary E. Lee Stamp called the roll of members, who introduced their guests when their name was called. There were 21 members present with 32 guests. Homer Huprich made a motion to dispense with the normal monthly reports of the secretary and treasurer and David Gillis made the second, motion passed. Doyle Jr. brought one item of business before the club because the seasons have already started for the Winona Little League Baseball teams (there are five) and also for the soccer clubs (there are three) practicing and playing at Hall Park; donate $150 to baseball and also $150 to soccer so they can buy field marking and line marking and other needed items; also to donate $250 to the Glenn Bennett Memorial Playground to purchase Rustoleum Paints to paint the playground equipment. The youth group of the Winona Friends Church, under the direction of Matt Fowler, has volunteered to do the painting on May 18. Dennis McArthur made the motion to make these donations and Jason McDevitt made the second, motion passed.
A part of the club's monthly meetings is to sing "Happy Birthday"to members born in that month. One member, Homer Althouse, was born in April as was one guest, Teri Pasco. Everyone sang to them. Doyle Jr. then made some announcements: this Saturday, April 27, the Winona Vol. Fire Dept. is sponsoring one of its Pancake & Sausage Breakfasts at the Firehouse, 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. The yearly Butler Township Clean-up Days are May 2, 3 and 4 at the township building. Do not forget Mother's Day is Sunday, May 12. The annual Winona Memorial Day Program is scheduled for Sunday, May 19, at the Winona Methodist Church at 2 p.m.
Doyle Jr. asked everyone to stand and Pledge Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and then he introduced guest speaker for the evening, Dennis Imhoff, volunteer at the Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center, Echo Dell Road at Beaver Creek, who presented the program of slides and taxidermied "Owls of Ohio."
Everyone gave Imhoff a round of applause for the great presentation.
No other business came before the club.
